Nail surgery is a minor procedure which involves removing part or all of the nail. This is done in such a way that the nail does not grow back.
Nail surgery may be required when an ingrown toenail becomes repeatedly infected or when the toe becomes continually painful.
The surgical process is undertaken after an assessment of the patient. The process itself consists of an anaesthetic to numb the toe followed by the lifting and removal of the damaged nail. To prevent the problem recurring a phenol solution is applied to the matrix of the nail (where the nail grows from). The toe is then dressed and upon healing should be completely pain free. Nail surgery has a very high success rate and can be applied to either or both sides of the toe without necessitating full nail removal.
